CoolDudesDiving.com is an amalgamation of photography and writing that loosely follows the theme of diving and the underwater world. The site is the brainchild of Ben, Brad, and Rob. We hope you enjoy our hard work!
Our site employs a good bit of modern web technology, and developing the site has been a learning experience. We started from scratch, and built this site using exclusively open-source software. It is, and always will be a work in progress.
Our web server is running Ubuntu Linux as an operating system, and Apache as an HTTP server. Both are freely available and extremely powerful. Apache serves some 60-70% of all web traffic according to Netcraft. Some flavor of Linux powers the majority of the world's servers. Our site was built on the Joomla content management framework, which powers an astounding 2.6% of the web, according to its developers. All of our graphics were constructed in GIMP, an open-source alternative to programs like Adobe's Photoshop. All of our code was written either in vi (A built-in command line text editor in Linux) or Jedit, a Java-based text editor that is licensed under the GPL.
CoolDudesDiving was founded in 2010 by three people with a dream. And very little spare time to chase that dream. Today, we're on our way to fulfilling that dream once and for all!
